Garysburg, NC, Peanut Plant May Burn for a Long Time

Oct. 31, 2024
Fire Chief Roy Bell said the peanut oil caused the flames to persist at the Garysburg facility.

A peanut storage facility in Garysburg may burn for days, if not weeks.

Fire Chief Roy Bell told WRAL that the fire was contained, but oils from the peanuts were causing the flames to persist. The fire could take weeks to fully extinguish.

"It wouldn't be unusual to go for two weeks. It all depends on how many peanuts they got in there," he said.

Adding to the challenges, reports indicate low water pressure in the area due to a burst pipe earlier this week. As a result, firefighters drafted from the Roanoke River.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
